Shisha cleaning | How to care for a hookah?

How do I clean my hookah? What do I have to consider, what tricks are there and what equipment do I need? These are very legitimate questions and therefore we go in this section in detail on the subject of cleaning and care of a hookah. A pure, unadulterated taste and smoking pleasure - that is a desirable goal for every hookah session.

The problem is that over time any deposits and other residues settle on the individual components of your hookah and thus also the tobacco taste can be strongly distorted, which can even lead to inedibility. But this does not have to be so and the hookah or the individual parts can be cleaned quite well.

What do you need to clean your hookah?

Shisha cleaning equipment
  • Detergent or dishwashing liquid, vinegar, dishwasher tabs, "schmand-way" (available at shisha stores), toothpaste, or any other cleaner you feel comfortable with.
  • Sponge, rag, a long and narrow round brush for the smoke column, toothpick
steel sponge, wire brush, cellulose cloths

Shisha hose cleaning

Shisha hose cleaning

When cleaning the hookah hose, it depends on how it is constructed. Some hoses have a wire spiral inside, which ensures stability so that the hose does not kink. With this spiral, you should refrain from rinsing it too often with warm water. And if it is necessary, please dry it immediately. It's best to use a hair dryer on a low setting until the moisture is really out. Otherwise it will start to rust at some point and that is the right time to replace it with a new one. In the meantime, however, there are also hoses with a stainless steel spiral or completely made of silicone. Here you don't have the rust problem, but the hose should still be completely dry after cleaning.

Shisha Bowl cleaning

Shisha Bowl cleaning

Since it is permanently wet when smoking and deposits regularly accumulate in it, it is best to empty the shisha bowl after each shisha session, but at least every two to three days, and clean it if necessary. For this purpose, there are different cleaners (for example, "Schmand-Weg") that you can get in the hookah trade or you can simply use biologically safe household cleaners, vinegar or dishwashing detergent. Depending on the type of agent, you should spray or apply it, let it soak in and, if necessary, remove the residue with a brush or cloth. Make sure that all residues of the deposits and the cleaner are really removed. To do this, you can rinse the bowl with hot water - not boiling, otherwise it could crack - better once more than too little. Finally, rinse again properly with cold water and wipe with a dry rag or cloth. In the trade there are also gimmicks such as stainless steel balls, which are rotated by swiveling in the bowl and thus take the dirt deposits.

Shisha smoke column cleaning

The smoke column of a hookah is also susceptible to contamination and, depending on the tobacco head, molasses may even stray into it. Therefore, it should also be cleaned regularly, but this is possible without much effort. To do this, you need a suitable round brush, which is available in the shisha trade and, for example, simply toothpaste. You put this on the round brush, turn it a few times through the smoke column and then finally rinse it again properly so that no residues remain. Depending on the degree of contamination, you may have to repeat this.

Shisha tobacco head cleaning

Tobacco residues or molasses tend to settle on the tobacco head of the hookah. If the head is glazed, you can clean it very well and it is usually enough to rinse it with warm water, in case of heavy deposits you might want to soak it in a bowl with a little vinegar beforehand. Residue in the holes can usually be removed with a toothpick or other pointed object. For a clay head that is not glazed, it is a little more complicated. You should not put it in vinegar, because then there will definitely be some taste residues. You may even need to scrub the residue off with a steel sponge. Of course, this will leave traces on the head in the long run, but it is still better than smoking residues. And yes, at some point the time has come for a new tobacco head.

Clean Smokebox | Maintain HMD

Clean smokebox

With the Smokebox, you usually have no problem cleaning it. First you remove the coarse residues, which you can easily scrape off. Then you simply put the part in a bowl with hot water, add detergent and let the whole thing soak in. Depending on how dirty it is, this should take between 30 and 60 minutes. After that, you can rinse off the remains, but you may have to clean the smokebox with a steel sponge. Then let it dry and the smokebox is clean and ready for its next use.

Clean chimney top

Clean chimney top

The chimney top of a hookah is almost predestined to let deposits settle on every part of the top. Therefore, you should also take it apart for cleaning, so that you can proceed piece by piece. First, remove the coarse debris. Use a pointed object, such as a long knitting needle, to free the tube by pushing it through. Also remove the biggest dirt from the other parts. Then put everything in a bowl, add hot water and a detergent. The panacea for these deposits is the "Schmand-Weg" from the Shisha trade, vinegar or washing-up liquid does it however also. You let the whole thing stand for a while, depending on the pollution and severity of the deposits again about 30 to 60 minutes. After that you will see how the water has changed color. Any residues that are still left can be brushed off with a wire brush. You may have to go through the tube again with a cloth, which you again pierce with a knitting needle. This way you can also reach the inside of the tube.

Conclusion shisha cleaning

The longer you do not clean the parts of your hookah, the more time-consuming it will be when it is actually necessary, because the deposits may already have a negative impact on the taste. Overall, all your hookah components can be cleaned well. However, it is recommended to keep the cleaning intervals short. Then you can usually do without the rough work with, for example, a wire brush or a steel sponge, which leave traces if used too often. All cleaning tools and agents are available in the shisha trade. As described above, in most cases, household cleaning aids will also do the job.
