Which hookah coal to buy?

Basically, you can distinguish between two types of hookah charcoal. On the one hand, the most common natural coal and on the other hand, the rather frowned upon self-lighter coal. Since you also inhale part of the charcoal smoke when smoking hookah, high-quality charcoal should be used. Self-lighter charcoal is mixed with fire accelerant (often black powder), which makes the coal glow. Some of these substances can then also be contained in the smoke, which is why this type of coal is rather discouraged. The burning time can be an important purchase criterion for hookah charcoal. Especially if you want to enjoy your hookah with friends a little longer, you should buy coal that has a long burning time (up to 1.5 hours). Natural charcoal certainly fulfills this criterion rather than commercially available quick-fire charcoal, which was developed for smoking hookahs without a charcoal lighter in the outdoor area.

Shisha natural charcoal

Natural charcoal for shishas are made from coconut shells or bamboo fibers. This is a natural product, which does not contain chemical additives. The carbon content of natural charcoal is quite high at around 85%, which ensures that the coal becomes hotter and produces less ash. No tree is cut down for hookah charcoal made from coconut fiber. Coconut shells are used, which are a waste product of palm oil production. During the cultivation of the raw materials of natural charcoal pesticides and fertilizers are generally not used, and the cultivation process can be described as sustainable. Unlike self-lighting charcoal, natural charcoal must be made to glow with a heat or fire source. Outdoors, the Shisha coals can be made to glow in a fire or with a gas-powered Bunsen burner. Coal self-igniter

Self-lighting coals can be easily lit with a lighter and are therefore perfect for outdoor hookah smoking. They are made from the same basic materials as natural charcoal, but usually contain black powder so that the charcoal can be lit without an external heat or fire source using only a lighter or candle. Since you don't need a gas burner or charcoal lighter, this type of charcoal is the first choice for open airs, for example. For experienced hookah smokers Self-lighting coals are not very popular with experienced shisha smokers. They contain chemical substances that can be inhaled and the contained accelerant can develop its own taste, which can distort the aromas of the tobacco. Anyone who has bought a noble tobacco variety for a lot of money, of course, wants to enjoy it as unadulterated as possible.

 

Charcoal lighter - What products are available?

You have decided against quick-fire coal and want to rely on natural hookah coal in the future? A very good decision in our opinion! If you want to smoke hookah with natural charcoal, then sooner or later you will need a charcoal lighter. Basically, we can distinguish between gas-powered and electric charcoal lighters.

Gas powered coal lighter

Gas-powered lighters for hookah charcoal are perfect for outdoor use, such as camping. They are operated with standard gas cartridges and are equipped with a kind of pan in which the hookah coals can be placed.

Electric coal lighter

Electric charcoal lighters are the most common, as they are the easiest to use at home. To heat the coal is only necessary to use a power outlet. The hookah charcoal is placed directly on the heating coil or in a designated pan, which is then heated to such an extent that the natural charcoal is made to glow. There are also models which resemble a toaster and can heat up to 6 pieces of coal at once.
