Shisha structure | components of a hookah

What components do you need?

A hookah is a composite marvel of different components, which all only in interaction with each other do what they are intended for: To provide you with beautiful and relaxing smoking pleasures. They come in rustic or modern, cheap or expensive, colorful or dignified. All these variations also have the advantage that you can put together exactly the shisha of your dreams that fits you individually.

Shisha structure overview

1. the bowl

Shisha construction bowl

In the Shisha Bowl is the water, which primarily serves to cool the smoke. The bowl is usually made of glass and has different shapes, colors and sizes and therefore also different filling quantities. Sometimes transparent and clear, so you can watch the activity in the bowl, sometimes they are so bright and colorful that you can hardly look inside.

There are small with a wide belly, narrow and tall or even curved vase shapes and crystal glass look. The larger the volume, the more smoke can accumulate. Whereby this is not necessarily an advantage, because with smaller volumes the smoke is constantly renewed and is therefore always fresh. The draught also varies as a result and so it again depends on your individual idea.

How much water goes into the bowl?

The amount of water also depends on how deep the dip tube goes in. As a guide for you, you can assume that about two or three centimeters of the dip tube should be covered with water.

2. the immersion tube

Shisha dip tube

The dip tube of a hookah directs the smoke through the water and finally further into the hose. This process is important because the smoke in the water is filtered, but also cooled. Without this filtering process, you would draw in the smoke with more harmful components. On most dip tubes today, there is also a diffuser that is responsible for minimizing or almost completely suppressing the typical shisha bubbling. But even if you don't want to do without this bubbling - the diffuser can usually be unscrewed for this reason. So depending on your mood, you can also adjust this for you the way you want.

3. the base

shisha base

The shisha base is threaded onto the bowl and thus also represents the connection between the dip tube and the smoke column. The hose connections also extend from the base, whereby the differences between the individual manufacturers can be considerable in terms of number. If you often want to smoke a hookah together with several people, then it is recommended to buy a hookah with a base, which has several connections for hoses. This allows several people to smoke at the same time.

Most bases have a so-called closed chamber system - a closed chamber system. This means that you can blow the smoke out of the bowl with one or two puffs, which is an advantage when the smoke is already slightly stale.

In the case of a base that does not have this closed chamber integrated, it is now possible in many cases to retrofit this with a silicone insert that simulates this mode of action.

4. the hose adapter

Shisha hose adapter

The hookah hose adapter is the connecting piece between the hose connection on the base and a hose that would otherwise not fit on the connection. Often the hose adapter is sold in a complete set together with the hose.

5. the hose

Shisha hose

The hookah hose is an essential component of a hookah and is usually fixed to the hose connection in conjunction with the hose adapter. In the meantime, silicone hoses have prevailed over the classic hoses made of artificial leather or even goatskin. They are much easier to clean and, in addition, they are more individually tailored to the smoker's ideas through color design options. The usual length of the hoses are 150 centimeters and usually they are already supplied with mouthpiece and end piece. With soft silicone hoses, a hose spring is recommended, but in this case it is usually also supplied. It prevents the hose from kinking.

6. the mouthpiece

Shisha mouthpiece

The hookah mouthpiece is the pleasant transition from the hose to the mouth. Flat or rounded specimens are common. The usually larger openings of the round mouthpieces allow easier drawing, although the small openings of the flat pieces also have their supporters. In this case, the draw is heavier, but the smoke is also more intense and possibly more mature in taste.

Mouthpieces come in different materials, for example, glass, stainless steel, carbon, wood or aluminum. But that's not all and Hookah has come up with a special gimmick with the Ice Bazooka. This is put on the hose, but before smoking put in freezer, so that it can cool down the smoke. But be careful: it does not fit on all hoses.

7. the column of smoke

shisha smoke column

Through the hookah smoke column, the smoke is drawn from the head down through the dip tube into the bowl and is cooled in the process. There are also the smoke columns in different materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, brass or glass. The lengths also vary, although one should not overdo it here. The longer the smoke column is, the more residue settles and the more difficult it is to clean. Therefore, a length of about 12 to about 25 centimeters still seems within reason. Stainless steel combines a few very positive properties, with glass you should perhaps be more careful. Otherwise, there are of course no limits to your preferences.

8. the molasse catcher

shisha molasses catcher

Molasses is the liquid that remains from the moist tobacco after burning. The purpose of the molasses catcher is to catch any molasses running or dripping down from the head and thus prevent contamination of the underlying parts, such as the smoke column or the bowl. Glass has strongly prevailed as a material because it is very easy to clean.

Besides this practical task, the molasses catcher is often used as a visual gimmick, because it is quite capable of spicing up the aesthetics of your shisha.

In order to be able to use the molasses trap on the smoke column, this should be provided with a ground joint ( 18/8 or 29/2 are common), via which it is normally connected to the head adapter. But in the meantime there are solutions even if the smoke column has a screw connection. So usually no reason for stress.

9. the coal plate

Shisha charcoal plate

A hookah charcoal plate is the tray for the charcoal and sits between the smoke column and the head. In most cases, it is made of stainless steel, aluminum or heat-resistant glass. You have too much heat in your HMD? Then simply remove a coal and place it on the coal tray. Besides the practical function, the charcoal plate is also an important design element for shishas.

10. the shisha head

Shisha head

Without the shisha head nothing works in a hookah, because in him is the tobacco and on him the coal. Tobacco heads are now available in countless variations, from the original "Turkish clay head" to models made of ceramic, glass, stone, aluminum and even the very modern design made of silicone. Another variation is the number and position of the holes, from one hole in the so-called phunell to five or six holes in the multi-hole clay head. At the same time, a distinction was also made in the construction method.

On the tobacco head comes either an aluminum foil, a smoke box or a chimney top. There, the coal is then placed on it, which ensures that the tobacco is also heated.

Which version you choose depends mainly on your ideas and wishes. The smokebox or HMD (Heat Management Device) is certainly the easiest to handle, with the aluminum foil you have to consider a few things. A middle ground is the fireplace attachment.

How do I build a shisha head?

We have a detailed description of this in our chapter "How do I build a hookah head?" published for you.

11. the HMD and the fireplace attachment

Shisha HMD / Fireplace attachment

An HMD is a heat management device, i.e. a device that can be used to regulate heat. The HMD is also called a smokebox. The charcoal is inserted or placed there, which is then to give the tobacco the necessary heat. An alternative to the smokebox is the fireplace attachment.

12. the shisha coal

Shisha coal

Shisha charcoal is needed to heat the tobacco. A distinction is made between natural char coal and self-igniting charcoal. To make the self-igniting charcoal glow, you can simply light it with a lighter or hold it over a gas stove or a Bunsen burner. It is best to do this with a coal tongs and over a surface on which there can be no unwanted burn holes. When it comes to natural charcoal, coconut charcoal, which is actually sustainably made from the husk of coconuts, has become widely accepted. No artificial additives were used and therefore it burns also tasteless and almost residue-free - thus leaving hardly any ash. Natural charcoal needs a very high temperature to glow. You have several options for this.

Shisha coal lighter:

The best way to make natural charcoal glow is a charcoal lighter, which was developed specifically for the needs of hookah smokers. There are models with a charcoal basket, but also models that come in the design of a toaster. The coals are simply inserted into the specified depot and then brought to glow by an electric heating coil. This process takes about 10 minutes.

The old electric stove:

You can also simply put hookah coal on the stove top, highest level, until it glows. It is best to use aluminum foil or even form a cylinder with the foil, so that the coal is heated from all sides. Important: Heating the coals in this way is dangerous and therefore not recommended.

Bunsen burner or gas stove:

You are on the road or in a place without electricity? Then a gas stove or a Bunsen burner is the perfect solution to make your Shisha coal glow. Tip: Of course, you can also glow hookah charcoal in a fire.

Speaking of clean and safe:

In closed rooms, you must always ensure that there is enough fresh air available when heating the coal. You burn oxygen and carbon monoxide is produced.
