You want to buy a phunnel and wonder which head design is best for it? We have compiled the two most common designs for single-hole heads.

The Phunnel head building with a Smokebox is probably the easiest and most reliable way to smoke a hookah with a phunnel head. First, the flavored hookah tobacco is filled around the phunnel hole. So you put a ring of tobacco in the head and should make sure that it is lower at the edge of the phunnel than in the middle. This is because the air is sucked in from the edge in a phunnel and with this design you achieve that the air has to take the path through the tobacco and can thus transport a lot of flavor. Then you can place your Heat Management Device (HMD) on the head. The best known manufacturer is Kaloud, but there are many good and cheaper alternatives. The glowing coal can then be placed on the HMD and after a few minutes your hookah is ready to be smoked.

The Phunnel head construction with aluminum foil is somewhat more elaborate and complex than the head construction with a Smokebox. The hookah tobacco is placed exactly the same in a ring loosely around the raised phunnel hole. Again, the tobacco stand should be deeper at the edge of the phunnel than in the middle. Then household aluminum foil (4-fold) or armor aluminum foil (1-fold) is placed tightly over the head and fixed. A hole punch is then used to poke holes in the surface of the aluminum foil. There are different philosophies here: some poke 2 rows of holes on the outer edge of the phunnel, others make holes in the entire surface of the foil including the center. Considering that the air should be drawn as far as possible through the tobacco to transport a lot of flavor, the first version should be prioritized.
